11)Note-Taking Strategies.

Good reasons to take notes:

1)Taking notes helps you to concentrate and listen effectively.

2)Notes create a resource for exam preparation.

3)Notes taken in classes often cannot be found elsewhere.

Note-taking strategies:

a) Before the lecture: Be prepared.
  • Know what the lecture wil be about.
  • Set up notebooks.
  • Arrive on time and sit near the front, in order to take good notes, you need to hear and see clearly.
b) During the lecture: Concentrate and pay attention.
  • Arrive prepared to actively listen and learn, and to think critically.
  • Do not try to jot down everything be said. Recognising key concepts and identifying and selecting what is relevant.
  • How can you recognise what is important?
☆Distinguish between main points, elaboration and examples.
☆Verbal 'signposts' like:  "There are four main aspects" , "This is important...." or "To sum up".
☆Repetition. Important points will often be repeated.

c) After the lecture
  • Review your notes while the lecture is fresh in your mind.
  • Reviewing helps you remember what was said, builds up your understanding, and helps identify gaps in your knowledge.
  • To review:
♡Read through your notes . Fix spelling errors, expand on abbreviations and tidy up handwriting.
♡Fill in the missing words.
♡Highlight major sections, main points and diagrams.
